Understanding Car Financing Options
Often, when purchasing a vehicle, financial assistance is involved. Whether it is a pre owned model or the factory fresh automobile, the buyer should know what it means financially. The advantages and disadvantages of financing used cars differ from financing a brand new car through a loan. Study of these differences will help buyers choose what fits their budget and needs.
Interest Rates: New vs. Used
However, when thinking about loan terms, the lender is deciding to assess risk. In general new car financing is going to have lower interest rates. But automakers and banks often offer promotional deals that offer reduced rates, so borrowing for a new model is more attractive.
On the contrary, financing used cars usually comes with higher interest rates. Depreciation and potential mechanical issues make pre owned vehicles riskier to the buyer. That is compensated by lenders charging higher interest, mostly for older models. However, buyers with good credit will still be able to score competitive rates.
Depreciation and Its Impact
The value of a car drops immediately after a car leaves the dealership. The initial few years in the life of the new model see the steepest depreciation. The loss in value is rapid and has an impact on resale potential and can make a car worth less than the final loan balance.
Once used vehicles have already depreciated significantly, they hold value more steadily. Long term ownership is more financially stable when the buyer is financing a pre-owned car and avoids the sharpest declines in worth.
Loan Terms and Monthly Payments
Financing agreements are structured by lenders on the cost of the vehicle and the borrower’s qualifications. New cars loans usually last for a longer period of time, up to seven years. Lower monthly payments are obtained by extending the terms, but more interest is paid over time.
Loans for used car purchases are shorter. Since pre-owned vehicles are cheaper, financing arrangements usually run over fewer years. Shorter repayment periods will lower total interest payments but may increase the monthly payments.
Warranty Coverage and Repair Costs
Comprehensive warranty protection is actually one of the major advantages of purchasing a new car. Most manufacturers offer very good coverage for several years, so there are very little out of pocket repair expenses for the first few years of the loan period.
Some warranty may still be on used vehicles but older models may develop more repairs sooner. When comparing financing options, then, you must take into consideration possible maintenance costs. Extended warranties are purchased by some buyers to offset unexpected expenses.
Insurance Costs and Considerations
The cost of auto insurance premiums depends on many factors such as the age of the vehicle, replacement cost, repair expenses and more. Generally, higher insurance coverage is necessary for new cars, because they are more valuable. However, comprehensive and collision protection can also be expensive.
However, insuring a used vehicle is usually cheaper than insuring a new one. Replacement costs are lower and depreciation is less for those coverage options. This means that buyers of a pre-owned car can use the savings to pay for maintenance or loan repayment.
Approval Process and Credit Requirements
Only financial stable borrowers receive loans from lenders. Manufacturers offering incentives usually have more flexible qualification criteria when it comes to new car financing. Low or zero-percent financing may be offered as special promotions for people with average credit; approval may be easier.
It can be more stringent with used car financing. For older vehicles, lenders scrutinize credit history very closely. Even if the applicant has poor credit, he may still be able to receive favorable terms, but he may need a larger down payment or higher rates.
Making the Right Choice
Personal priorities are the deciding factor between financing a used or new vehicle. With lower interest rates and warranty mileage, they’re more appealing; as older cars have reduced depreciation and price. When weighing the financial aspects of each choice, you need to make a decision that is in line with the long term goals.

Last bike ridden by Hairy Biker Dave Myers to be auctioned for charity
- The BSA Goldstar ridden by Dave Myers in the final series of The Hairy Bikers is being auctioned for charity
- It will go under the hammer at the National Motorcycle Museum in Solihull on Wednesday 26th March
- Proceeds from its sale will go to CancerCare North Lancashire & South Cumbria and the NSPCC Childline charities
The last motorcycle ridden by much-loved Dave Myers, one half of the incredibly popular TV chef duo The Hairy Bikers, is being auctioned for two worthy causes – CancerCare North Lancashire & South Cumbria and the NPSCC Childline.
The BSA Goldstar motorcycle, which famously featured in the BBC’s “The Hairy Bikers Go West”, the last ever series of The Hairy Bikers, will go under the hammer with H&H Classics at the National Motorcycle Museum in Solihull on Wednesday 26th March.
Dave fought a long battle against cancer but sadly died in February last year. The auction of his beloved BSA Goldstar will be a fitting tribute to his effervescent personality, together with his immense influence and passion for motorcycling.
Ahead of the auction, the bike is in a special static display at the National Motorcycle Museum and features life-size cut-outs of both Dave and Si King, celebrating their enduring friendship, plus Dave’s leathers, helmet and boots.
Speaking of her wish to support charitable causes through Dave’s legacy, his widow, Liliana Myers, said: “The auction of Dave’s BSA Goldstar is a fantastic way to support two charities who do incredible work.
“We hope to raise as much as possible, so would encourage interested bidders to dig deep into their pockets for the chance to own a truly special motorbike.”
National Motorcycle Museum director, James Hewing, said: “The auction of his bike represents a unique opportunity for someone to own a piece of motorcycling history while celebrating Dave’s enduring legacy.
“We hope this display will resonate with fans and visitors, reminding them of the joy and inspiration Dave brought to so many.”
The Hairy Bikers series ran for two decades, turning Dave Myers and Si King into national treasures. The huge appeal of their warm and jovial personalities, coupled with their love for motorcycling and foodie expertise, saw millions watch them on TV, keen to see them on their travels.
Colette McKay, managing director at H&H Classics, which is conducting the auction, said: “H&H Classic is honoured to be auctioning such a significant motorcycle. Dave’s immense popularity and passion for motorbikes and cooking is legendary, so we’re confident we’ll raise as much as possible for two very worthy causes.”
Enthusiasts, fans or collectors wishing view the motorcycle can do so by visiting the National Motorcycle Museum, in Solihull. Meanwhile those wishing to bid on Dave Myers’ cherished BSA Goldstar can do so in person, via telephone or by bidding online at the sale on Wednesday 26th March, or by leaving a commission bid with the auctioneers ahead of the sale.
All of the classic motorcycles and vintage scooters appearing in the sale can be viewed at the museum from 1pm on Tuesday 25th March or on the sale day itself. For more information on any of the lots, visit www.handh.co.uk.

With Special Guest Jess Conrad OBE
Sunday 23rd February - 9am – 5pm
The 59 Club’s annual “Renewal” day at the Ace on Sunday 23rd February 2025, along with opportunity to renew your membership if it is due, join the Club and meet with the Clubs volunteer leaders who will be on hand throughout the day, this year includes from noon not only with live rock n’ roll courtesy of special guest five-piece band all the way from Germany, “The Dizzy Dudes”, but also with Jess Conrad OBE who, in addition to kindly attending the Grand Re-opening of the Ace in 2001, was at both St Pauls Cathedral in 2019 and Westminster Abbey in 2022 for the special 59 Club anniversary services.
On the evening of Saturday 14th January 1961 episode 16 of the weekly TV series “Dixon of Dock Green” titled "The Burn-Up", based at the Ace with burn ups, speeding and jukebox record racing as the focus in scene 10 & 12 of the broadcast, Jess featured as the character Mike Jarrod, a ton up boy!
The episode opened with PC Dixon stating to camera:
"Evening all...Y'know, if I've got a bee in my bonnet about one particular thing, I suppose it's road safety - and you find most coppers are the same. It's not only the tragic side of the accident that gets you down: it's the thoughtlessness, the selfishness, the sheer perishing lunacy - for sometimes it's nothing more nor less, believe me...I was up at the coroners court at the town hall the other day. There'd been a nasty pile-up on the by-pass, and I had to go along with young Jamie, as a police witness..."
In a subsequent conversation with PC Dixon, the desk sergeant asks a CID officer named Andy "Coffee Bar Cowboys. These young 'erbs who hang out at the caff with their flash bikes and their girls. What's their local caff, Andy?" Dixon interjects and replies "The Ace, that's the place. Might be an idea to pop up there sometime and see what goes on".
The episode concludes with the message of the programme being delivered directly to camera by PC George Dixon:
"Y'know motorcycling's a fine sport - one of the best - but, like every other vehicle, a motorbike can maim and kill unless it's ridden with proper care. I know I beef about road safety, but ...well, straight up, the roads these days are more like battlefields, sometimes. So whether it's a car, motorbike, or whatever it is - take care always, won't you. Your life - and other people's - is in your hands: It's as simple as that...Goodnight All..." Dixon then salutes to camera.
The script, by Ted Willis, was at a time of popular outcry and concern regarding the ton up boys and carnage on the roads.
Jess will be signing and selling copies of “From Blitz to Glitz” - his fascinating autobiography, from his childhood in London during the Blitz to his time as a Teddy Boy on the wrong side of the tracks, from being discovered by legendary music producer Jack Good to his work with peers such as Billy Fury and Cliff Richard, from starring in dozens of movies to wowing live theatre audiences all over the world... and so much more!
