Yorkhill Childrens Charity Easter Egg RunThe annual Motorcycle Run in aid of Glasgow Children's Hospital Charity (formally Yorkhill Children's Charity). One of Scotland’s largest motorcycle runs as thousands of motorbikes, trikes and scooters parade through the streets of Glasgow to help raise funds.

  2. Record breaking crowds turn out to Prescott Bike Festival 2017

    Posted on

The seventh annual Prescott Bike Festival took place at Prescott Hill Climb (home of the Bugatti Owners Club) on Sunday 9th April 2017 and was hailed as the most successful yet. Thanks to the glorious sunshine, over 6,000 motorcycle enthusiasts flocked to a sun-baked Prescott to support the fundraising event for Blood Bikes and were treated to a whole feast of entertainment both on and off the track.

Festival Organiser Gordon Downie said “It was a hugely successful Bike Fest and we'd like to thank everyone who helped make it so, from those that took to the hill, the entertainers, musicians, volunteers, marshals, bike clubs to trade stands and exhibitors - not least the thousands of visitors who came to support us. We'll post the final results on our Facebook page shortly, but early doors suggest that a record breaking sum has been raised for the Blood Bike charities this year. Exciting plans are already afoot for next year, which will be held on Sunday 15 April 2018”.

The Mayor of Gloucester, Councillor Neil Hampson said “I am delighted to support the work of the Blood Bikers. As a district qualified nurse, I understand the importance of the service that they provide moving vital medical supplies, blood, pathology samples and human breast milk from medical centres and hospitals throughout the UK. Both my wife and I have donated over 150 pints of blood throughout the years, so it’s a charity that resonates with me well. Prescott Bike Festival is a great fun way for the charity to boost its fundraising and profile; I have really enjoyed the day. The Blood Bikers deserve recognition for the outstanding free service that they provide to the NHS and for selflessly giving their free time to help save lives throughout the country”.

Amongst the many VIPs in attendance was David Hailwood, son of the legendary Mike ‘the Bike’ Hailwood with his father’s iconic Honda RC174 motorcycle, Norton sidecar racing World Sidecar Champion Stan Dibben, British motorcycle racing champion Rod Scivyer and popular British sporting hero Eddie ‘the Eagle’ Edwards. Eddie took to the hill (not on skies we hasten to add) but in a Grinnall three wheeler.

Record breaking crowds turn out to Prescott Bike FestivalThe bike festival always celebrates engineering with an eclectic array of machinery and this year was no exception. The highly skilled engineer Allen Millyard returned with no less than eight of his amazing creations including his award-winning Flying Millyard (powered by a 5-litre V-twin aero engine). Matt McKeown thrilled the crowds once again with his Chinook helicopter engine powered Shopping Trolley and his latest project, the World’s Fastest jet powered Hearse called ‘Dead Quick’ which he hopes to set a new 200mph record in later this summer. Plus engineer Tom ‘The Atom’ Anable was ecstatic to actually reach the top of the hill climb course in his record-breaking Monowheel.

The event featured large displays of historic, modern and race bikes, a Paddock Specials Show ‘n’ Tell area, and the unique opportunity for members of the public to take part in the spectacle by ‘running the hill’ or participating in a thrilling passenger ride experiences. There was also a whole raft of entertainment too from live music, stunt shows, trade stands, motorcycle manufacturers and motorcycle clubs – what’s more it helped raise vital money and awareness for the Blood Bikes charities to help keep them on the road.

All proceeds from the event go to the Nationwide Association of Blood Bikes and regional blood bike group Severn Freewheelers, one of 27 blood bike groups around the UK that provide a free out-of-hours courier service for medical essentials. The life-saving service is run by volunteers and operates between NHS facilities, with Severn Freewheelers alone dealing with around 400 calls per month on emergency response BMW R1200RTs.

  3. Poole Dream Machines Full Season Saved for 2017

    Posted on

Poole’s premier weekly motorcycle event Dream Machines has been saved for the full 26 week April-end of September season and will start on 4 April 2017 thanks to support from Poole Quay businesses.

Following the announcement that the event would be limited to 18 weeks from May-end August because not enough people had come forward as Volunteer Marshals, Poole Quay businesses including The Lord Nelson, Poole Quay Fish & Chips Kiosk and Quayside Emporium have rallied a new group of volunteers to help support the event.

The new Volunteer Marshals will be providing support particularly in April and September, the two months the event was due to lose.

With Poole Tourism providing paid Marshals from May to end of August, the support of the new Volunteer Marshals will ensure the event can now run safely for a full season in 2017.

Graham Richardson, Poole Tourism Manager, said; “Huge thanks go to the Poole Quay businesses for working to make this happen. With them providing support through their volunteers to cover for the months of April and September it means that riders will now be able to enjoy the full 26 weeks of Dream Machines as usual. The event could not happen without them and we hope that riders will come out and show their thanks and support for Volunteer Marshals, the Quay businesses and the event.”

The aim is that with the help of the new volunteers, Poole Dream Machines will again have a passionate and committed group of Volunteer Marshals who are willing and able to support the event in future years.

Leigh Whittall, owner of the Fish and Chips Kiosk, said; “Dream Machines is a really important event for Poole Quay and the businesses operating there. It is part of Poole’s heritage and is vital to keep businesses and facilities open for everyone to use.  It is fantastic that people are now showing their support but we are on the look out for more, as with a bigger pool of volunteers it makes it more manageable for people to be involved.”

Graham Richardson, said; “Whilst it’s great that the event will now take place for 2017, it’s really important that more volunteers, especially riders who enjoy the event, get involved and make the effort to support it.  If people don’t we could be in be in this position again next year or in danger of losing it altogether.”

Anyone who would like to volunteer can contact The Lord Nelson , the Fish and Chip Kiosk and Quayside Emporium or email: [email protected]

Season armbands are on sale now costing £8, at the same price, now for the 26 week season and are available from Poole Tourist Information Centre, based in Poole Museum or from The Lord Nelson, the Fish and Chip Kiosk and Quayside Emporium.

Eddie the Eagle Edwards to attend Prescott Bike FestivalBritish sporting hero Eddie ‘The Eagle’ Edwards will be heading to the slopes of Prescott Bike Festival to support the Blood Bikes. Prescott Bike Festival is the charities biggest annual fundraiser and takes place at Prescott Hill Climb, Cheltenham.

Festival Organiser Gordon Downie said ‘We are delighted that Eddie is coming to Prescott Bike Festival. Eddie is a fearless man who has overcome huge sporting and life hurdles, the whole country loves Eddie. I’m sure that he’ll enjoy meeting like-minded people who, like him are pushing the boundaries in pursuit of their dreams. Although not a biker, throughout his sporting career Eddie had his fair share of spectacular crashes and has undergone extensive surgery. It’s heart-warming that he’s coming to support our fundraising event which provides a vital lifesaving service to the NHS’.

Prescott Bike Festival prides itself on its diversity and celebrates engineering excellence; from rare, classic, modern, customised to hand built bikes and those of historic significance, this year the organisers have secured the most diverse motorcycles yet.

Crowd pleaser Matt McKeowen will be returning with the World’s fastest shopping trolley powered by a Chinook helicopter engine (holds record speed of 70.4mph/ 113.298kmh), plus his latest project, the World’s Fastest jet powered Hearse called ‘Dead Quick’. Iconic motorcycle builder Allen Millyard will take to the hill on the award-winning Flying Millyard motorcycle (powered by a 5-litre V-twin aero engine) and returns with no less than eight of his amazing creations – all of which will be in action.

Bike Fest’s excellent showcase of Paddock Specials include over 100 examples of rare machinery where you can meet the owners, watch them fire up and see them run. From David Jefferies 2002 hand-built 570cc Vertemati Supermoto race bike, an original Joey Dunlop TT race bike, James Toseland’s 1998 Honda CBR600 World Supersport Bike, through to a 1914 Triumph LX126 one of only eight in the world which also participated in the very first London to Brighton pioneer run to David Hailwood, son of TT legend Mike ‘the bike’ Hailwood with his legendary fathers 1966/'67 500cc Honda RC181.

There’s plenty of attractions off-track to keep the whole family entertained too. You can take a thrilling passenger ride in anything from a Formula Two or Watsonian Squire Sidecar to a Morgan Three Wheeler, watch the jaw-dropping ‘On the Edge’ Trials Stunt Show, and hear the ever popular George Formby tribute act from the motorcycle film, No Limit? The Orchard main stage will host several Rock n Roll and rockabilly bands and dancers throughout the day and over 100 quality trade exhibitors.

About Blood Bikes and Severn Freewheelers:

Severn Freewheelers the local branch of Blood Bikes celebrate their tenth anniversary of operating in the county. Founded in 2007 the motorcycle based charity, provides a free delivery service to hospitals and medical centres throughout the county; moving vital medical supplies, blood and pathology samples as well as transporting frozen human milk from the donor to the milk processing banks. This has been a real lifesaver due to the necessity of very premature babies having intolerance to anything but human milk. The bikers selflessly give their free time in all winds and weathers to help save lives throughout the country.

Severn Freewheelers is a life-saving service run entirely by volunteers and it part of the Nationwide Association of Blood Bikes. All riders are trained in the movement of medical essentials and have one common goal – to alleviate suffering and reduce the funding pressures on the NHS.

Severn Freewheelers deal with around 300 calls per month locally and rely solely on fundraising to operate, please find below some facts/details on how they support the NHS throughout Gloucestershire, Hereford and Worcestershire and North Wiltshire.
