  1. Harley Davidson Club Ireland (HDCI) is sorry to announce that they have had to cancel next years European SuperRally® (40th anniversary) event, which was due to be held on 16th to 20th May 2013 at Waterford Institute of Technology Sports Campus, Carriganore, Waterford.

    Following consultations with An Garda Siochana, it was determined that a significant level of policing supports and resources to effectively police the event safely were necessary. The cost for providing the policing plan was estimated that it could rise to or beyond €300,000, making it cost prohibitive for the club to host the five day event in Ireland.

    HDCI would also like to thank all stakeholders including; Waterford City & County Councils, City Manager, WIT Campus Services, Waterford Spraoi, Michael Slattery Associates, Failte Ireland, Federation Harley Davidson Clubs of Europe, Stenna Ferries, An Garda Siochana, all local political representatives and members of Harley Davidson Club Ireland for their help and assistance.

    They wish every success to Harley Davidson Club Poland who will now be hosting the 2013 SuperRally® event.

  2. Would you like to appear before millions of people around the world? The search is on for motorbike owner/riders with disabilities, and their bikes, to ride in the Stadium at the Paralympic Opening ceremony.

    We are looking for a completely diverse collection of bikes and bikers, all with disabilities, and you would need to be available for the ceremony – 29th August 2012 - plus a few rehearsals immediately prior to the ceremony.  Because of security regulations at the stadium, you would also have to leave your bike with us for a few days before the ceremony, so this would need to be a bike that you do not use as a vital part of your daily life! You do not need to have any previous performance experience, but just the willingness to celebrate the diversity of modern Britain in an exciting moment in the Paralympic Opening ceremony.

    If you are interested in being part of this once in a lifetime opportunity please email the following citing MOTORBIKES in the subject title to: [email protected]

    1.       A photo of you and your bike.

    2.       Your contact details (name, address, email, phone number).

    We will then contact you directly if we would like you to be involved.

    Closing date for applications is 21st February 2012.  You would then need to be available to visit us in East London by mid-March to give us ID and other details for security purposes.

    This is a volunteer role; however, we can pay some travel expenses within London.

  3. The current British Superbike champion Tommy Hill is gearing-up for a guest appearance at the annual Adelaide Motorcycle Festival which begins a three-day run at the King’s Hall, Belfast on February 10.

    Hill who will celebrates his 27thbirthday the day before the show opens was involved in a cliff-hanging finish to the 2011 title race decider.

    “I did it by half-a-wheel,” reflected Hill. “In fact the official difference between myself and John Hopkins was just 0.006 of a second.”

    “That meant the championship was mine for the first time but it was close, I won it with two points to spare.”

    “So far as Belfast is concerned I’m really looking forward to the trip. The fans over there are both fanatical and knowledgeable.”

    Hill has sampled both the World Superbike and World Supersport Championships but he was originally a motocrosser. At the early age of six Hill quickly moved to high level schoolboy motocross. However, at the age of 14 he had a near fatal motorcycle accident which caused him to briefly retire from the sport. But Hill still had an ambition to race and ride motorcycles and he soon returned making his debut in the British Championship in 2001. This was to be his first stepping stones into the world of Superbike racing. Since then he has become the youngest rider to win a Superbike race, the youngest rider ever to qualify on pole position at a World Superbike Championship event and of course last year he became a BSB champion for the first time.

    Hill who, hails from Kent, won seven races last season. He had 17 podium finishes, nine pole positions and eight fastest laps. No wonder he has been retained by Swan-Yamaha where his team-mate is Yorkshire’s Ian Hutchinson who will also grace the Festival.

    “Hill promises to be a huge draw,” said show promoter Billy Nutt. “That never-to-be forgotten final race at Brands Hatch has already gone down in the history books as the closest-ever.”

    “Hutchy created his own piece of history back in 2010 when he became the only rider to win five Isle of Man TT races in the same week,” added Nutt. “But at the end of that season he was involved in an horrific crash not of his making.”

    “It took him 18-months to recover and last November he set the Macau Grand Prix alight by finishing third.”

    For his part Hutchinson said: “This year is definitely a big one for me and I have never been looking forward to a season so much.”

    “I am glad that I had the opportunity to race at the end of last year as I have always had faith in my own ability but I just needed to prove to any doubters that I could still race. I have wanted to race in BSB for several years.”

    “However, right now I’m focused on another visit to Belfast—I’ve some very fond memories of both the North-West 200 and the Ulster Grand Prix and I intend doing both again this year.”

    Hill and Hutchinson will be joined at the King’s Hall complex by Alistair Seeley the recently crowned Enkalon Irish Motorcyclist of the Year.

    Seeley who won the British Supersport title last year is now preparing for a return to the Superbike ranks again riding for the Tyco TAS Suzuki team.

    So far as the display of racing machinery is concerned Nutt is delighted to have a rather special factory Yamaha taking pride of place.“This is the bike on which Spaniard Jorge Lorenzo won the 2010 MotoGP world championship,” said Nutt. “It’s thanks to Hurst Motorcycles that this Yamaha will be brought over from Holland.”

    “We are also banking on the Ballymoney-based JMF Millsport team unveiling their new Ducatis as well as their rider Steve Mercer.”Home

    Make a note of the Festival dates: Friday February 10, Saturday February 11 and Sunday February 12—just the ideal build-up to St Valentine’s Day!

  5. First Aid for Riders has officially launched its website www.firstaidforriders.org and the first of the tailored First Aid courses, which are delivered by the St John Ambulance for riders whether on two wheels – motorcycles and scooters or three wheels – trikes.

    First Aid for Riders has now become a reality with the involvement of the St John Ambulance and the award of a DOE Road Safety Grant, through the Community Transport Association (CTA) to bring the initiative to the motorcycling community across Northern Ireland.

    Bryan Myles, the manager responsible for the funding at CTA said, “We are delighted to be awarding the grants on behalf of the Department of the Environment to help organisations make their local roads safer for everyone. We know that the voluntary sector plays a significant role in reaching some of the most vulnerable people in society and we hope that this funding can further inspire creative people to do even more to improve the safety on our roads”.

    The St John Ambulance, “Is pleased to be associated with the First Aid for Riders scheme in Northern Ireland. Despite the great moves forward in road safety over the years, collisions do still occur and it is important that first aid care is provided promptly when injuries happen.

    The course that we are running in association with the First Aid for Riders Scheme will give delegates the skill and confidence required to be able to care for a casualty until the arrival of the emergency medical services.”

    The First Aid for Riders course content will consist of:

    Bleeding;
    Bone, muscle and joint injuries;
    Casualty movement;
    Communication and casualty care;
    Emergencies in public;
    Head injury;
    Primary survey;
    Resuscitation (adult);
    Removal of a crash helmet;
    Shock;
    Unconscious casualty.

    The course takes place over six hours, after which successful delegates receive a St John Ambulance (NI) certificate that is valid for three years.

    Rendering First Aid to a motorcyclist involves many additional considerations that may not be “instructed” in basic first aid courses, for example a motorcyclist may be wearing heavy leathers, armour and should be wearing a helmet means that delivering essential lifesaving first aid to bikers can be more life critical. Thus to give course attendees a flavour of rendering First Aid as a rider out on the road delegates are asked to attend with their normal motorcycle riding gear.

    Trevor Baird, the initiatives coordinator says, “The goal of First Aid for Riders is to reduce death and serious injuries of motorcyclists and other road users by disseminating first aid knowledge in the motorcycle community.

    I hope riders never have to use what they have learned on the course, but by attending one of these courses riders could be making the difference between a life lost and a life saved.”
