Compass Expeditions is very excited to announce that they will be sponsoring the privateer team of SimonPAVEY.com/Delta Kunststoffe Husqvarna UK for the 2013 Dakar Rally.

Compass Expeditions has signed up as a sponsor with the privateer team of SimonPAVEY.com/Delta Kunststoffe Husqvarna UK. Simon Pavey will participate in his 9th Dakar with co rider Canadian Don Hatton.

“Its is a great thrill to be involved with Simon and the team in this way” says Mick McDonald, Compass Expeditions Co-founder, “it enables us to be somewhat involved in this iconic rally, Simons 9th, and to see the Compass Expeditions logo on the graphics of the bike makes it even more exciting” continues Mick.

Simon and the team will be producing a web based documentary; “Making Dakar is something that I’m really excited about. People are always asking me about the preparation for Dakar, the training, bike building, scrutineering and all the bits that the TV isn’t able to cover. It’s our way of giving something to Dakar fans that I think is being missed at the moment.” Says Simon Pavey

Simon will also be in Australia August 2013 for some off road training in the Flinders Ranges in conjunction with Compass Expeditions.

  2. Sam Manicom’s Adventure Motorcycle Travel Books

    Posted on

    Into Africa

This is the story of an enlightening, yet daunting (and sometimes downright harrowing) journey across fourteen African countries by motorcycle. Sam, a novice biker, decides to break free from the doldrums of everyday life in search of adventure. He finds it!

Into Africa is upfront with adventure, mishaps, dust, heat and the thrill of overlanding. The word-pictures that bring a good travel book to life are all here; Sam’s perceptions of people, places and predicaments have real depth and texture, their associated sights, smells and sounds are evoked with a natural ease.

Whether he’s being shot at, or knocked unconscious in the Namibian desert, this eye-opening tale catapults you into Africa. He lives in a remote village, escapes a bush fire and climbs a mountain. This is a captivating book.

  3. French postpone fines for riders and drivers not carrying breathalyser

    Posted on

Fines for drivers of all motor vehicles - including motorcyclists, - who are caught without a breathalyser kit, will be implemented in France from March 2013, according to the IAM. The fines were due to be enforced from 1 November 2012.   All drivers in France, including motorcyclists, are now required to carry a breathalyser kit and the €11 fine is will be applicable to all road users, except for those on mopeds.

Single-use breathalyser kits will satisfy the requirement.  The legal limit in France is 50 mg per 100 ml of blood, lower than in the UK (the UK limit is 80mg). They cost between £1 and £2 and they will be available at ferry and tunnel terminals for crossings to France. It is intended that people will be able to test themselves to check whether or not they are over the French limit.

Anyone driving in France is already required to carry a warning triangle and a fluorescent safety vest to use in an emergency. Additionally UK motorists and motorcyclists must display a GB plate.

IAM director of policy and research Neil Greig said: “The new French rule is a genuine attempt to reduce the number of alcohol-related accidents. France’s lower limit means it’s very easy to be over the limit the morning after as well. As always, the best advice for road users is not to drink and drive at all.”

  4. Winner of the holiday at The Royal Agricultural College

Just wanted to let you know that my boyfriend and I really enjoyed the weekend we won at The Royal Agricultural College, Cirencester on 21st - 23rd September 2012.

Winner of the holiday to The Royal Agricultural College, Fiona Jones 2012We got totally soaked riding there and riding home, however the Saturday was lovely weather and the college was a great base to explore the surrounding Cotswold villages.

The college buildings and grounds were beautiful. The room had everything - en-suite bathroom, heating, TV, hairdryer and tea and coffee making facilities and there was a launderette whose dryers we were thankful of! The dining hall did a wide selection for breakfast.

We would definitely return there and definitely recommend it to anyone. The staff were very friendly and helpful.
