  1. Henry Surtees Foundation backs pioneering ‘Blood on Board’ project‏

    Posted on

Medics behind the pioneering ‘Blood on Board’ project have heralded the “life-saving” donation of two vehicles to be used to transport blood.

The two Vauxhall Mokka 4x4 vehicles were handed over to the two charities - Northumbria Blood Bikes and Blood Bikes Cumbria – which provide vital transportation of blood in the region. The donation was made by the Henry Surtees Foundation in support of the Blood On Board project, which allows the Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS) to carry and administer blood on its rescue missions.

The vehicles were handed over on behalf of the foundation by James Whitham, the Yorkshire-born motorcycle racer turned commentator. In a racing career spanning 18 years, he secured four British titles and competed in World Superbike, World Supersport, Endurance and Grand Prix. As well as the success, the hard-charging motorcycle racer also survived crashes and battled lymphatic cancer.

He said: ‘I’ve chased time at race tracks in pursuit of podiums, but for the likes of the Great North Air Ambulance Service, every second can literally be the matter of life or death. The Air Ambulance and regional Blood Bike groups do an incredible selfless job; I hope that I will never need their services, but having had mates rescued from the side of remote mountains, and of course at race tracks - its a service that resonates with me’.

James Whitham visited the GNAAS base at Langwathby, near Penrith, today to officially hand-over the two Vauxhall Mokka 1.7CDTi 4x4 SUVs to be used by the two Blood Bike groups so that they have all-weather transport for the ferrying of the blood between hospital and aircraft.

The Henry Surtees Foundation was set up by motorsport legend John Surtees following the tragic death of his son Henry. Mr Whitham added: “I was absolutely honoured to be asked to represent John Surtees OBE and The Henry Surtees Foundation today to hand over the two vehicles. I know that John would also like to say a special thank you to Vauxhall for their support too. I’m sure the assistance of these vehicles will be a huge benefit to the region and help save multiple lives.”

As previously announced, The Henry Surtees Foundation also donated equipment to GNAAS including thermostatically controlled boxes and blood warmers to enable them to deliver fresh blood supplies to the scene of life threatening accidents, and carry out roadside blood transfusions. GNAAS is the only air ambulance in the North of England to perform this life-saving procedure, which has been administered three times since launching six weeks ago.

Owain Harris, of Northumbria Blood Bikes but also speaking on behalf of his Cumbria counterparts, said: “We are extremely grateful to the Henry Surtees Foundation for their generosity in providing a four wheel drive vehicle to the charity. Normally the blood is transported by motorcycle, however when the roads are covered in snow we are unable to ride, and would have to suspend the service. The Vauxhall Mokka, a four wheel drive, means that the blood will get through, every day, regardless of the weather in order that The Great North Air Ambulance can carry out it's vital role in saving lives using the Blood on Board project.”

The Blood on Board project was devised by Dr Rachel Hawes, of GNAAS and Newcastle Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

She said: “After years of research, the project is now active and is already benefitting patients across the North. Lives will be saved because of this advancement in medical care, it is as simple as that. This would not have been possible without the support of Blood Bikes and the Henry Surtees Foundation, and we are immensely grateful to them for that.”

  4. Get your motor running, head out to the highway and join the King of the Jungle!

Midlands Air Ambulance Charity (MAAC) has announced that the current King of the Jungle and seven times World Superbike champion Carl Fogarty will lead an expected 3,000 strong biker ride-out to officially kick-off the 5th Bike4Life Fest on Sunday 26 April 2015.

Carl is personally appealing for riders across the region to register and join him on the 23 mile motorbike procession from Shrewsbury to the RAF Museum Cosford near Wolverhampton, the prestigious home to the Bike4Life Festival – a major annual fundraising event in MAAC’s calendar.

Last year more than 8,000 bikers, friends, family and enthusiasts from all across the UK took part in what has become one of the biggest and best biker events in the country. The event is partnered with RAF Museum Cosford and the Safer Roads Partnership to raise awareness of biker safety.

Commenting on his involvement, Carl Fogarty said: “I jumped at the chance to get involved with Bike4Life Fest 2015 to help support and raise awareness of the life-saving work of Midlands Air Ambulance Charity.  This service is a vital lifeline for bikers with over 40% of the incidents the aircrew responds to being road traffic collisions, which sadly often involve bikers. It’s going to be a great honour to lead out the 3,000 strong bikers and I’d urge anyone who wants to be part of the event to kick start the motorcycle season to sign up.”

With arena displays, stalls, exhibitions and biker tutorials, the Bike 4 Life Festival promises to be a great day out for bikers, families and the local community.  Live music will be staged by radio station Planet Rock 105.2FM, showcasing the best in Midlands music talent.

Jason Levy, fundraising and marketing director for Midlands Air Ambulance Charity, said: “Bike4Life Fest has grown year on year and Carl Fogarty’s support of the event is fantastic and will undoubtedly make it our best year yet. We have a great relationship with the biking community, and as well as being a great day out, Bike4Life Fest also aims to raise vitally important funds for our life saving service, so I’d encourage anyone thinking of getting involved, to support our event and register now for the Ride Out.”

While the Ride Out is just £5, all visitors to the Festival will also gain free access to the RAF Museum Cosford.

To register to get involved in the ride out led by Carl Fogarty, simply visit www.bike4lifefest.com.  It only costs £5 to register with all proceeds raised going to MAAC.  Entrance to the Bike4Life Festival is free, however, organisers would like all visitors to make a donation to the charity at the event.

  5. WHEELS FOR TROOPS

    Posted on

"Wheels" was established following my eldest sons tour of Afghanistan in 2012.

He was keen to mark his Battalions safe return and remember those who had paid the ultimate price. It followed that after buying a Harley that this was a motor bike ride out. The date was fixed and a route set. On the day it poured with rain but approx. 30 riders turned out and a great day was had by all and much needed funds were raised for military charities close to our family’s hearts. The ride was so much enjoyed that we were asked to repeat it the following year… much larger numbers attended and more money raised.

2014 saw a much smaller event due to our family’s circumstances but money was still raised for the Poppy Appeal. Having now regrouped the time has come for us to move this event up a level and support and thank the military through supporting the tireless work of these groups.

Wheels for TroopsWheels for Troops is now heading towards it fourth annual event, to be held on Saturday 4th July 2015 within Surrey.

Wheels is a not for profit group who aims to support those members of the community who are or have served in the three UK forces. We will also support those who are physically and mentally injured, their families and the families of the bereaved. This is achieved through the promotion and monitory support to some of the invaluable smaller military charities.

This is done through our annual Motorbike Ride and Family event, which this year is being held. on Saturday 4th July. The Ride out will commence in Tunnel Road Reigate and after 25 miles it will culminate the Family event at a Redhill Memorial Park. Here there will be fundraising stalls, food and drink, as well as some rather special entertainment. The details of the later will be release once confirmed. With the support of three local councils, it promises to be a fun filled and successful day.

The day will start from at 10am in Tunnel Road Reigate where the riders their bikes and supporters will enjoy a warm welcome of bacon butties and coffee, being available from The Market Stores. The ride out will set off at 11am prompt and follow a route through Epsom and Ewell followed by Mole Valley before finally returning home to Reigate for an afternoon of entertainment. The ride will be fully marshalled by Volunteers from SERV, assisted by riders from the Royal British Legion Riders Branch.

The ride will be fully marshalled by volunteers from SERV and signposted. All participants are asked to make a £15 donation to take part in the ride, for which they will receive an event t-shirt. Riders can register by emailing [email protected] or by requesting via our face book page Wheels for Troops Beyond2014

    Money raised from 2015 event will be used to support the invaluable work of the following charities;

    The British Legion Poppy Appeal
The Royal Hospital Chelsea, home of the Chelsea Pensioners
    Armed Forces Bikers
    Blesma, The Limbless Veterans
