  1. GARY JOHNSON TO RUN OWN TEAM AT 2017 ISLE OF MAN TT RACES

    Posted on

Double Supersport TT race winner Gary Johnson will run his own team at the 2017 Isle of Man TT Races fuelled by Monster Energy, having announced a return to Suzuki machinery for the 1000cc races at last week’s official press launch on the Isle of Man.

The Lincolnshire rider, who is still searching for a title sponsor, will run the all-new GSX-R Suzuki in the RST Superbike, Pokerstars Senior and RL360º Quantum Superstock races. He will continue to campaign Triumphs in the two Monster Energy Supersport races having purchased the East Coast Construction bikes used by Lee Johnston in 2016.  Phil Reed’s team will continue in the sport as one of Johnson’s personal sponsors.

A front-runner now for a decade, Johnson took victory in the opening Monster Energy Supersport race in 2014 when riding for the Smiths Racing Triumph team which added to his win in the second 600cc encounter in 2011.

The 36-year old, who made his Mountain Course debut in 2007, has four more podiums to his name, the most recent of which came in the first Monster Energy Supersport race in 2015 when riding for Mar-Train Racing Yamaha and he also stood on the podium in the 2009 Senior TT, 2011 Superbike TT and the 2014 Superstock race.

Last year saw him enjoy another successful week on the Island, with fourth in the Bennetts Lightweight and fifth in the RL360 Quantum Superstock races the undoubted highlights. He also recorded three more top ten finishes in the RST Superbike and Monster Energy Supersport races and now has 30 silver and four bronze replicas in his collection.

Riding the Penz13.com BMW, 2016 also saw Johnson set a new personal best lap of the 37.73-mile course with a speed of 130.945mph in the Senior, which currently makes him the 12th fastest rider of all time around the Mountain Course.

Commenting on his plans, Johnson said:

“I’m feeling as strong as I’ve felt over the last few years and although it’s a massive undertaking to run my own team, I’m really focused on the job ahead and determined to make my mark this year.  I’ve got a great bunch of lads supporting me and I’m looking forward to giving it a good go this year.”

  2. The TT Route on a Tractor

    Posted on

A group of people are taking their 1975 restored Massey Fergusson Tractor, plus a trailer, plus some cyclists and musicians from Pattishall, Northants to the Isle of Man in June and complete a circuit of the TT course, raising funds for Dogs for Good.

If any Motorcyclists and enthusiasts are travelling that same route, or care to remain on the Isle of Man after the TT Rally to spend some time with our fundraisers, that would be great.  There is no onus to support them financially if they don’t want to, but sharing a photo on Facebook would be much appreciated.

They leave Northants on Friday 16 June, catch the ferry from Heysham on Monday 19 June to Douglas, returning on the Heysham ferry on Friday 23 June.

They are the Convoy for Canines – TT Road Trip 2017

  3. PADGETTS HONDA RACING CONFIRMS CONOR CUMMINS SIGNATURE

    Posted on

The Padgetts Honda Racing team will have a two-pronged attack at the 2017 Isle of Man TT Races, fuelled by Monster Energy, with Conor Cummins joining 11-times TT winner Bruce Anstey at the Batley-based squad.

The Manxman will contest the RST Superbike, PokerStars Senior, RL360 Quantum Superstock and Monster Energy Supersport races riding the latest-spec Honda CBR1000RR and Honda CBR600RR for one of the most experienced, and most successful, teams on the grid.

It comes on the back of Cummins having a successful outing for the team at last year’s TT after a last minute deal saw him contest the RL360 Quantum Superstock and two Monster Energy Supersport races. Riding the then Valvoline-liveried machines, he took an excellent fourth in the opening Supersport race and backed this up with seventh in the second, repeating the latter result in the Superstock race.

He also posted new personal best laps on those particular machines with 126.620mph and 129.739mph in the Supersport and Superstock classes respectively. Cummins, who has ridden for the official Honda Racing team for the last three years, also enjoyed successful meetings for the team at the Classic TT and Ulster Grand Prix.

2017 will be the Ramsey-based rider’s 12th year of competing in his home event and as well as a change in teams, there’s also a change in his starting position this year. After eight years with the number ten plate, the now 30-year old moves up the order in 2017, starting at number seven, ten seconds behind Michael Dunlop and ten ahead of the returning Guy Martin.

The eighth fastest rider of all time with a lap of 131.767mph, Cummins has taken six podiums during his TT career, the last of which came in 2014 when he took second and third respectively in the Senior and Superbike races and he’ll be hoping a complete switch to Clive Padgett’s family orientated team will propel back onto the rostrum this time around.

Kiwi Anstey has taken three wins and 13 podiums at the TT since joining Padgetts in 2011 with Ian Hutchinson giving them seven wins in 2009 and 2010, the latter year seeing him become the first man to win five races in a week.
Clive Padgett, team boss at Padgetts Honda Racing team said:

“Conor’s a very talented rider and a great lad and we are proud to have him representing our Motorcycle shop and the team but we’d be happy to share the limelight with a headline sponsor if a company is interested in coming on board and joining us.”

“Conor’s had some great results already at the TT and what I particularly like about how he races is his focus and commitment. He’s a great fit for the team. We’ve already made a good start with him last year and it’s good to have him with us full time.”

    Conor Cummins said:

“What Clive Padgett and the team don’t know about racing on the Isle of Man isn’t worth knowing. He’s assembled a great group around him and I really enjoyed racing with the team last year – it just felt right. I’m looking forward to representing the team in all of this year’s races and I’m looking forward to repaying Clive’s faith in me.”

  4. TT RIDERS ARE ON THE STARTLINE FOR 2017 TT PRESS LAUNCH

    Posted on

The traditional curtain raiser not only for the 2017 Isle of Man TT Races fuelled by Monster Energy but also the road racing season will take place this year at the Villa Marina on the Isle of Man on the evening of Thursday 23rd March.

For many fans it will be the first opportunity to hear the thoughts of the leading contenders for honours now that the closed season behind the scenes negotiations have – almost – been completed.

This year’s event, which will feature a new theatre style seating format, will be hosted by TT TV commentator James Whitham with support from his TV co-presenter and two time TT Race winner Steve Plater. Fans will also have a reminder of the riders 2016 exploits with stunning high definition, big screen footage of the most memorable moments played during the course of the evening.

Among the hot topics at this year’s event will undoubtedly be the renewed rivalry between Tyco BMW’s Ian Hutchinson and the explosive Michael Dunlop which saw the leading duo share five race wins at TT2016 following a series of thrilling head to heads.

The evening will represent the first opportunity for fans to hear how Michael Dunlop is getting to grips with the Hawk Racing Bennetts Suzuki Superbike as he bids to win on a fifth different manufacturer’s machine around the Mountain Course while ‘Hutchy’ will be using the evening to put down a marker about ‘big bike’ wins for the Northern Ireland based Tyco outfit.

Honda Racing’s John McGuinness re-established his ‘King of the Mountain’ credentials in 2015 with his stunning PokerStars Senior TT Race win and although McGuinness didn’t add to his 23 titles in 2016, the ‘Morecambe Missile’ will be looking for a change of fortune on the new Honda Fireblade. He’ll also no doubt offer some interesting insights into his new teammate Guy Martin.

John’s former teammate at Honda Racing Conor Cummins, a rider with six TT podiums to his name, will be unveiling his plans for tackling the Mountain Course in 2017 at the chat show while TT race winners will be appearing thick and fast on the stage. Double Supersport TT Race winner Gary Johnson is booked in for the sofa as is 2016 race winner Ivan Lintin, who has stood on the top step of the Bennetts Lightweight TT podium for the last two years, will be returning with the RC Express Racing outfit for a fourth season.

Another rider who has enjoyed success in the Lightweight class is Dean Harrison, who won the corresponding race in 2014. Bradford based Harrison’s is another rider who will enjoy the stability of appearing with the same outfit as he campaigns for the Silicone Engineering team for the second year.

James Hillier will outline what makes his partnership with JG Speedfit Kawasaki tick. James, who is now with the team for an eighth successive season, will be looking for his first Superbike win after several close challenges. Like Harrison, Hillier stood on the podium three times in 2016 and will be looking to move to a higher step this year.

Harrison’s Sarolea TT Zero teammate Lee Johnston has switched to Jackson Racing for all classes and the Northern Ireland rider will be sharing his own unique brand of humour with fans as he plots his first TT Race win on the Ten Kate backed Honda.

Peter Hickman, the event’s fastest ever newcomer, is another to switch team and manufacturer, joining Smiths Racing BMW outfit for his 2017 campaign. Smiths Racing, who enjoyed a race win in the 2014 Supersport TT with Gary Johnson, will now be looking for Superbike honours with the popular Louth based rider.

Another rider to favour the German manufacturer is Manxman Dan Kneen, who teams up with Rico Penzkofer’s Penz13.com outfit in 2017. The local favourite will undoubtedly enjoy a shorter trip to the Villa Marina for the chat show than most of his fellow competitors.

Norton duo David Johnson and the returning Josh Brookes will be jetting in from Australia to talk about the challenge of improving on the team’s breakthrough performances from last year, which saw them post the British manufacturers first ever 130mph lap of the TT Mountain Course.

Representing the old guard, 11 time TT race winner Bruce Anstey is again expected to ride for Batley based Padgetts motorcycles but team boss Clive Padgett has yet to announce his machine plans following the Kiwi’s hugely innovative appearance on the RCV last year. Like Anstey, fellow veteran competitor Michael Rutter, is another rider who can reminisce about racing at the TT in the 1990’s but who is still challenging at the front of the field.

In the Sure sidecar class seventeen time TT Race winner Dave Molyneux will be looking to put last year’s disappointment behind him when the Manxman failed to start one race and failed to finish the other. Molyneux again teams up with fellow Manxman Dan Sayle, himself the holder of eight race wins around the Mountain Course, and will be sharing how his 2017 plans are shaping up.

While 2016 race winners Ben Birchall/Tom Birchall maintain their fraternal partnership, its all change with last year’s other Sure sidecar race winners John Holden who has teamed up with Manxman Lee Cain as he bids to add to his two Sidecar titles while Tim Reeves, who finished third in the Sure Sidecar 2 Race in 2016, will be discussing his strategy for adding to his solitary 2013 race win and his renewed partnership with Mark Wilkes.

There’s always significant interest in the newcomers and Joe Thompson, Adam McLean and Paul Jordan will be sharing their winter course learning preparations under the watchful eye of Rider Liaison Officers John Barton and Milky Quayle with the fans.

Doors open at 7.30pm for an 8pm start with tickets priced at £5 available from the Villa Marina box office at www.villagaiety.com. If you can’t be on the Island, you will be able to watch the proceedings on a live stream hosted on iomtt.com.

  5. Carl Cox Motorsport mixes it up with sponsorship and promotion of Michael Dunlop

    Posted on

Carl Cox Motorsport has announced their progression to the very highest level of Road Racing in partnership with 13-time TT-winner Michael Dunlop

Bringing together the adrenalin fuelled worlds of music and motorsport, the partnership looks to bring the exploits of Dunlop to an even wider audience, as Carl Cox presents the enigmatic Ulsterman to his vast fanbase.

At just twenty-seven years old, Dunlop has already made TT history, being the first rider to lap the 33¾ mile circuit in under 17 minutes (with a 133.962mph average speed lap) and with 13 wins is placed fifth in the all-time standings.

In 2017 Dunlop will be campaigning machinery in the RST Superbike, Monster Energy Supersport, RL360 Quantum Superstock and PokerStars Senior TT races at the Isle of Man TT Races fuelled by Monster Energy as well as the North West 200, Ulster GP and other selected events. He will be running his own MD Racing team in the more production spec Superstock and Supersport classes with high visibility Carl Cox Motorsport branding.

Internationally renowned DJ Carl Cox has been a long-time admirer of the TT and the impressive performances of Dunlop. In fact Cox has for many years arranged his schedule around Mona’s Isle and the White Isle, playing end of TT Week sets in Douglas, Isle of Man, before his traditional Ibiza residency.

Cox has been supporting motorsport teams in events as diverse as the Ducati Tri-Options Cup in British Superbikes (winning the class twice), classic and sidecar racing in both the Northern and Southern Hemisphere whilst promoting new young talent in New Zealand’s 250cc Hyosung Cup.

The partnership was forged as Dunlop visited the traditional Cemetery Circuit races in New Zealand on Boxing Day, spending time with the Carl Cox Motorsport crew and trying out their sidecar for size.

    Michael Dunlop explained;
"Carl is a household name and it’s great to have such a big character supporting the team this year. Carl Cox Motorsport have a presence across many different types of racing, so it will be great to see them so involved on the Roads. It is an exciting opportunity to link up with Carl who I know shares our enthusiasm for racing, and hopefully we can bring him and the team even more success.”

    Carl Cox commented,
“We’re excited to be part of Michael Dunlop's upcoming season, and of course the 2017 IOM TT! Michael has been very supportive of us working together and I'm looking forward to some great, fast racing, forging a good team relationship and sharing all the memorable moments along the way. I can't wait to be there!”

Gavin Sokolich, Brand Manager Carl Cox Motorsport added:
“This will be our first year involved with a two-wheeled campaign at the IOM, and over the last two years we have been actively looking into which rider we could support. We've been fortunate enough to get to know Michael over the last year and we feel the two brands would easily work together. We're absolutely thrilled to be associated with such a talented rider and crew for this year's races.”
